Stem Cell Treatment Repairing Damaged Retina

stem cell contact lenses

Researchers from the University of Louisville claim to have reached a point in their studies that show by successfully generating new cells in retina, stem cells can restore damage retinal tissue.
These incredible findings are a huge step toward helping people who experience vision loss and blindness as a result of age-related macular degeneration and hereditary retinal degeneration.

Scientists have made the important discovery that stem cells which have been removed from bone marrow were attracted to damaged retinal pigment epithelium, the pigmented cell layer just outside the retina.

Many scientists are of the belief that this same technique that could cure optical defects, would be useful to treat congestive heart failure, diabetes, osteoporosis, Alzheimer, Parkinson diseases and spinal cord injuries.

I had very high blood pressure for several months without knowing it.
When my vision went down, the emergency room lowered my BP and diagnosed me with hypertensive retinopathy which there is no treatment fot.
The AMJ suggests that after 13 months of normal BP, the vision should be back to normal but not in my case. I believe that aome receptors in the retina/macula are permanently dead and that I would be a good candidate for in vivo stem cell retinal treatment. Can someone get back to me please. Thanks.

I have deteriorating retinas inherited from my mother. Several years ago I went to Johnshopkins and was told there was nothing that could be done for my condition at that time, but a lot of research was being done in stem cell research. Where can I find out more about the newest research. I am willing to travel to Louisville or anywhere if there is a possibility of help for my eyes.

At the age of 6 years, my vision came down due to unavailability of good diet. My number was big(L-2 & R-6) of plus. I did not use glasses till the age of 26. Then I my eyes were cured with LASIK LASER but the result was not 100 percent because of laziness of retinas. I want to know if the laziness of retina may be cured by this treatment ? If yes I want to take part in trials. My mail is bl1979best@gmail.com
    thanks.

My dad was diagnosed with Central Artery Inclusion left eye today. I am interested in stem cell research to repair the damage caused. The doctor said nothing can be done until the clot moves away from the central artery. Does he have a chance in regaining his eye site again? All the info received so far has been very discouraging.

  18. Radia Says:

I have been under the Groote Schuur eye clinic in Cape Town, South Africa for many years but they were unable to help me. All they could tell me was that my retina was affected by some unknown disease and that there was no cure. There is no name for what I have as they have never seen it before and they could show me the images they took of my eyes and the disease ate away at my retina. My left eye is most affected and I can’t see much at night.

Please if there is any hope for me to improve my vision let me know.

Two years back while cataract eye surgery was performed in the left eye, retinal damage occurred. Subsequently with in ten days, vitreotectomy and retinal corrective surgery was done. Though IO pressure was brought down below 20 vision
is not progressive. Earlier no eye pressure I had. Vision in that eye is below
50% that too blurred. is there any new line of treatment which can make vision
improvement ?.My age is 66 and I am taking BP tablets.Rt. eye vision normal even after cataract surgery.

Hi. I am 40 years old, and in July 2010, i suddenly suffered blindness in my right eye, caused by a Retinal Artery Occlusion, apparently, this was hereditary, and not some kind of stoke/blockage, initiated/caused by another organ (I had brain scans, heart scans and throat scans to confirm this).
My blindness is not pitch black or completely dark, I can see very small images, like looking through pin holes, but my eye does not seem to respond to light at all, or pick up any light ( I can see very vague shadows but no detail what so ever , for example, if you put your hand in front of my eye, I can see that there is something there, but I could not see what it is , or how many fingers are showing– I would say I am 95 % blind in the one eye). I went to Moorefields Eye hospital in London as well as private clinics , but no one can tell me of any known treatments/trials/procedures I can potentially have done to cure this.

Does anyone know if the recent stem cell advances/developments, for repairing damaged retina’s, has progressed any further, other than the clinical trials stage ? Can anyone recommend an institution I can contact for such a query, no matter what country ?
    Thanks
