Stem Cell Treatments For Cerebral Palsy

Stem Cell Treatments For Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy(CP) is one of the most common congenital childhood disorders. Cerebral palsy affects muscle tone, movement and motor skills. It can also lead to other health issues, including vision, hearing, and speech problems, and learning disabilities.

Although no cure exists as yet for cerebral palsy, a medical center in Cologne, Germany, is experimenting with the utilization of stem cell transplants to try and combat the disease. The center in Cologne utilizes each patients own bone marrow stem cells, which minimize the risk of rejection and infection developing.
When a stem cell transplant involves a donor and a recipient, the recipient risks developing graft versus host disease, a potentially fatal complication if the patient’s body rejects the transplanted cells.

The treatment of cerebral palsy is directed at repair of the injured brain and at the management of the impairments and disabilities resulting from developmental brain injury. It is hoped that one day, stem cell breakthroughs may lead to an effective treatment for cerebral palsy.
